The sintering experiments were conducted in a lab-scale milli-pot (diameter 53 mm, height 500 mm) fitted with six taps and transient variations of pressure-drop in different zones were analysed. The resistance was quantified for the three zones by correlating pressure gradient in each zone (ΔP/L) with the specific kinetic energy of air (v2) during sintering. The high temperature zone was further divided into two sub-zones i.e. pre-melt reaction zone (PMRZ) and granule melting zone. The PMRZ was responsible for the highest pressure gradient in the bed during sintering due to the changes in bed structure and the much greater gas volumetric flow rate due to the high gas temperature. The PMRZ included various physico-chemical processes and it was observed that the resistance in the PMRZ was high at a high suction value across the bed. High productivity was observed for a high suction pressure. The sinter yield was influenced by holding time over 1200°C and an exponential growth function was proposed to estimate the sinter yield.]]> Wed 10 May 2023 16:57:16 AEST ]]> Top gas recycling revisited to reduce blast furnace CO2 emissions https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43964 Wed 05 Oct 2022 14:08:23 AEDT ]]> Pressure-drop Modelling in the Softening and Melting Test for Ferrous Burden https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:40818 Tue 19 Jul 2022 09:37:21 AEST ]]> Changes in Microscale Liquid Formation in Lump and Sinter Mixed Burden Softening and Melting Tests with the Addition of Hydrogen https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55642 Tue 11 Jun 2024 18:50:56 AEST ]]> Experimental study on the physical properties of iron ore granules made from Australian iron ores https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:35039 Tue 11 Jun 2019 10:07:53 AEST ]]> Assessment of Blast Furnace Operational Constraints in the Presence of Hydrogen Injection https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:51444 Tue 05 Sep 2023 17:53:44 AEST ]]> Determining Drag Coefficient of Simplified Dendritic Particles in Metallurgical Systems https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:40634 Tue 05 Sep 2023 15:13:06 AEST ]]> Iron ore sintering in milli-pot: comparison to pilot scale and identification of maximum resistance to air flow https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:45343 Thu 27 Oct 2022 10:29:24 AEDT ]]> Sinter analogues mineralogy by different heating conditions https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39636 Thu 16 Jun 2022 14:27:16 AEST ]]> Numerical study into gravity separation of phosphorus from BOS slag during solidification https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39461 2S–C3P) during the solidification of basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS) slag. Typically, C2S–C3P solidifies first and has a lower density than the remaining liquid slag, suggesting that gravity separation may be possible. This study simulated the cooling behaviour of BOS slag, and predicted the potential for spherical C2S–C3P particles to float. A lumped parameter heat transfer model based on ordinary differential equations was developed to predict the temporal variations of slag temperature in a 5 mm diameter Pt crucible. Hydrodynamic calculations were also carried out to study the floating behaviour of the spherical particles. The results showed reasonable agreement between predictions and experimental measurements for the slag’s cooling rate. In the separation experiments, coarse C2S–C3P crystals were observed in the upper section of the crucible, while a glassy slag was observed in the lower section. This is consistent with the hydrodynamic calculations that showed the single particles floating up to the interface. Preliminary approximations were also performed for industrial slag pots which showed the higher possibility of separation for a shallow and insulated slag pot. Further studies are required to confirm the nucleation and growth behaviour in the experiments.]]> Thu 09 Jun 2022 09:15:21 AEST ]]> Weber Number Effect on Molten Droplet Impingement on a Flat Substrate https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:42714 Thu 01 Sep 2022 11:33:33 AEST ]]> Effect of -1 mm particle size fraction on JPU permeability and granulation characterisation https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:54594 Sat 02 Mar 2024 11:25:56 AEDT ]]> Characterization of granule structure and packed bed properties of iron ore sinter feeds that contain concentrate https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31473 Mon 23 Sep 2019 11:42:24 AEST ]]> Automated optical image analysis of iron ore sinter https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39102 Mon 09 May 2022 15:20:35 AEST ]]> Variables influencing the angle of repose of iron ore granulated mix https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:24503 Mon 08 Feb 2021 14:03:23 AEDT ]]> Qualitative study of melt composition on reshaping behaviour of suspended model iron ore sinter configurations https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:29760 2), with greater movement and reshaping as basicity increased]]> Mon 08 Feb 2021 12:11:20 AEDT ]]> A review of high-temperature experimental techniques used to investigate the cohesive zone of the ironmaking blast furnace https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:35023 Fri 31 May 2019 15:35:49 AEST ]]> The angle of repose and size segregation of iron ore granules: DEM analysis and experimental investigation https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:30550 Fri 30 Aug 2019 13:21:53 AEST ]]> DEM analysis of granule size segregation in iron ore sintering https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37607 Fri 26 Feb 2021 13:38:51 AEDT ]]> Interaction between basic sinter and Newman blend lump during the softening and melting process https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:36247 Fri 26 Feb 2021 13:23:58 AEDT ]]> Effect of temperature, time, and cooling rate on the mineralogy, morphology, and reducibility of iron ore sinter analogues https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37608 2 gas mixture at 900°C in a tube furnace thermo-gravimetric analyzer. One of the main reasons for the low lump utilisation is the perception that the softening and melting (S&M) properties of lump ores are not as good as sinter or pellets. This has been proven to be inaccurate as the interaction between sinter and lump significantly improves the S&M behaviour. Recently, Chinese steel mills are paying more and more attention to lump to cut down the emissions and maximise profits. As an example, the lump ratio for a 1050m3 BF at Shaoguan Steel increased from 17% to ~23% (replacing pellet) whilst coke rate was decreased by 5kg/t hot metal and the productivity was increased from 2.9 to 3.3 t∙m-3∙d-1. In this work, the interaction between a high basicity sinter and Newman Blend Lump (NBLL) were studied, including the S&M behaviour, bed structure and chemical reaction. A global BF model was used to predict the impact of the mixed burden on BF performance.]]> Fri 26 Feb 2021 11:46:52 AEDT ]]> Study of vacuum dewatering on iron ore with coarse size fraction https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37598 Fri 26 Feb 2021 11:25:51 AEDT ]]> Interaction between sinter and lump during softening and melting process https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46601 Fri 25 Nov 2022 15:38:41 AEDT ]]> DEM study on size segregation and voidage distribution in green bed formed on iron ore sinter strand https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:36244 Fri 17 Nov 2023 11:52:24 AEDT ]]> Development of softening and melting testing conditions simulating blast furnace operation with hydrogen injection https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:53192 Fri 17 Nov 2023 11:48:55 AEDT ]]> High Temperature Softening and Melting Interactions Between Newman Blend Lump and Sinter https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39733 Fri 17 Jun 2022 17:59:03 AEST ]]> Experimental analysis of the melt fraction - mechanical strength relationship for iron ore sinter analogues https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55288 Fri 10 May 2024 16:22:31 AEST ]]> Understanding cohesive zone behaviour of blast furnace based on computed tomography flow modelling in a fused bed of ferrous and coke particles https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55918 Fri 05 Jul 2024 14:14:10 AEST ]]> New techniques to measure softening and melting properties of mixed burdens of lump ore and sinter https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:32547 Fri 05 Feb 2021 15:00:20 AEDT ]]> Analyses of pressure drop in high temperature zone during iron ore sintering https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:40259 1200 °C).
